Cate Blanchett on Her 'Lord of the Rings' Casting: 'I Was a Huge Fan of Peter Jackson's Horror Films'
Blanchett reveals she didn't fully understand the scope of her role as Galadriel until she arrived on set.
The Borderlands star is also glad that director Peter Jackson kept the "nuclear" Galadriel scene in Fellowship of the Ring
Cate Blanchett has revealed that she signed on to The Lord of the Rings films because she was a huge fan of Peter Jackson's horror films.
However, the actress admits that she didn't fully understand the scope of her role as Galadriel until she arrived on set.
"I was a huge fan of Peter Jackson's horror films, and I thought, 'Oh, this is going to be a really fun, small-scale horror film,'" Blanchett told The Hollywood Reporter.
"But then I got to New Zealand and I realized, 'Oh, this is a huge, epic fantasy film.' I had no idea what I was getting myself into."
Blanchett also revealed that she was glad that Jackson kept the "nuclear" Galadriel scene in Fellowship of the Ring.
"In the book, Galadriel is very powerful, but she's also very restrained," Blanchett said.
"But Peter wanted to show her power in a more overt way, so he added the scene where she confronts Frodo and the others in Rivendell."
"I think it's a really important scene because it shows that Galadriel is not just a wise old elf, she's also a powerful warrior."
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 2001 and was a critical and commercial success.
The film was followed by two sequels, The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003).
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is considered to be one of the greatest film trilogies ever made.
